Fatal Crash Closes Fog-Bound M1
A man has been killed and up to 16 people injured in a motorway pile-up in heavy fog in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The incident, which involved a coach, a tanker and eight other vehicles, happened on the M1 in Hertfordshire around 4am.
It is understood that the victim was sitting in the front seat of the coach and he suffered head injuries in the crash.
Another person, believed to be the driver of a car involved in the crash, is understood to be receiving treatment in hospital for chest injuries and is believed to be in a serious condition.
The tanker was carrying syrup, which has spilled out onto the road.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area. The M1 is closed northbound between junction one and five, between the A406 North Circular Road and Watford and both entry slips are closed northbound at junctions two and four.
The motorway was not expected to reopen until later on Thursday afternoon.
A police spokesperson said: "We think the cause of the crash is likely to be people driving too fast in fog, but there will be a full investigation."
Large areas of England, including Somerset, Kent and Cambridgeshire, have been affected by fog this morning.
