Ryanair Founder Tony Ryan Dies

Irish entrepreneur Dr Tony Ryan, who founded budget airline Ryanair, has died following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dr Ryan, 71, died on Wednesday at his home in Cellbrdge, Co Kildare.

Born in Co Tipperary in 1936, Dr Ryan began his career with Aer Lingus, before founding aircraft leasing firm Guinness Peat Aviation in 1975 and moving on to launch Ryanair in 1985.

Dr Ryan was married with three sons.

A statement issued by his family said: "We are proud of Tony's many achievements, of his spirit of entrepreneurship, which created enterprise and opportunity for many people in this country and abroad and, most especially, we are proud to have been his loving and loved family."

Investigation Into Child's Stabbing Death Continues
Police are continuing to investigate an incident in Huddersfield in which a four-year-old boy was stabbed to death and his 14-year-old sister was seriously injured. The incident happened in Royd Street in Slaithwaite around 1pm on Sunday. The boy, named as Ryan Hawkins, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but died a short time later.

BBC To Close Its Digital Media Initiative
The BBC is to close its Digital Media Initiative (DMI). Beginning in 2008, DMI set out to move the BBC's production and archive operations to a fully integrated, digital way of working. The decision to close DMI follows an operational review of the project which was launched in October 2012.

£1.9bn funding package for public transport unveiled
Public transport, anti-congestion measures and bus services are set to benefit from a £1.9 billion funding package announced by Local Transport Minister Tony McNulty today. Of this year's allocation, up over £200 million on last year, top performing and improving councils will be awarded a total of £68 million additional reward funding.

BSkyB meet to appoint Chief Executive
BSkyB senior executives are due to vote later today on the appointment of a successor to the company's outgoing Chief Executive Tony Ball. However, there is speculation that News Corporation boss Rupert Murdoch, may be prevented from voting for his son James as the row over the appointment of a new Chief Executive BSkyB continues.
