Investigation Into London Street Shooting Continues
Police have released four people being held in connection with the fatal shooting of an innocent woman, believed to have been caught in the crossfire between two gunmen, in south London on Tuesday.
Magda Pniewska, 26, a Polish national, is believed to have been hit in the head by a stray bullet as she walked home from the Bupa care home where she worked.
She was found in a street in John Williams Close in New Cross shortly before 6.30pm on Tuesday.
Scotland Yard said that it is believed that Miss Pniewska was caught in the crossfire between two gunmen - one of whom was standing beside a red Volkswagen Polo and another who was standing at the top of some nearby steps.
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Boughton said that she was "an innocent woman caught in the crossfire".
Three people who were arrested have been released with no further action, while one person has been released on bail, pending further inquiries.
Police are now studying CCTV footage from the area. The red Volkswagen Polo, which was later found abandoned, nearly five miles from the scene, is undergoing forensic tests. No weapon was yet been found.
They are also investigating whether the shooting was connected to drug dealing in the area.
Oliver Thomas, southeast regional director of Bupa care homes, said that staff were "deeply shocked and saddened" by Miss Pniewska's death.
He said: "Magda was a truly lovely person and one of the most dedicated carers. She will be most deeply missed by both her colleagues and residents."
