Police On Trial Over De Menezes Shooting

The Metropolitan Police have gone on trial over alleged health and safety failures surrounding the death of Jean Charles de Menezes.

The Brazilian electrician was shot dead on July 22, 2005, by officers who mistakenly believed he was a suicide bomber.

The 27-year-old was shot at Stockwell Tube station in south London after he was followed by police from an address believed to be connected to attempted suicide bomber Hussain Osman.

The Crown Prosecution Service alleges the Metropolitan Police failed to conduct the operation without exposing members of the public to risk.

The charge is denied by the police. It is anticipated that the trial at the Old Bailey will last six weeks.
