DNA Link Found Between Two 1975 Murders

Police have discovered a DNA link between the murders of a woman and teenage girl in London more than 30 years ago, it has been revealed.

The killings of Eve Stratford and Lynne Weedon, who were both killed in the capital in 1975, are now being linked after the same DNA was found in both cases.

Miss Stratford, a 22-year-old Playboy Bunny Girl, was found dead in the bedroom of her home in Leyton, east London. She was found with tied up with her throat cut.

In September of the same year, Miss Weedon, 16, was attacked as she walked home in Hounslow, west London. She was hit on the head with a blunt instrument, before being thrown over a fence into an electricity sub-station, where she was raped. She died in hospital a week later from head injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Mortimer said: "Advances in forensic science mean that we are able to re-look at certain older cases with the very real possibility that some progress can be made that would not have been possible previously."

DCI Mortimer added that the police believed that the killer could have confided in someone about the murders and may even have bragged about them. He said: "They have kept a dark secret for the last 30 years and I'm sure they would have felt the need to share this burden with someone."

The government recently announced that forensic scientists were to begin reviewing 4,000 unsolved sex crimes.
