Investigation Into Child's Stabbing Death Continues
Police are continuing to investigate an incident in Huddersfield in which a four-year-old boy was stabbed to death and his 14-year-old sister was seriously injured.
The incident happened in Royd Street in Slaithwaite around 1pm on Sunday. The boy, named as Ryan Hawkins, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but died a short time later.
His sister, Donna, was also taken to the same hospital, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She underwent surgery and is now in a serious, but stable, condition.
A post-mortem on the boy is now underway.
Two men, aged 30 and 47, were arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remain in police custody. It has been reported that one of the men arrested is Ryan's father Chris Hawkins.
Ryan's family described the attack as "senseless", while the boy's great-uncle told reporters that the family were "devastated".
Detective Superintendent Tim Forber from West Yorkshire Police said: "This has been a very serious incident which has seen the life of a four-year-old boy having been brought to a tragic end and left a 14-year-old girl in hospital with serious stab wounds."
DS Forber also said that the incident is not being treated as a random attack.
