Man Dies Trying To Rescue Girlfriend In Selsey
A man has died while trying to rescue his girlfriend who fell into the sea off the Sussex Coast.
The 37-year-old slipped off rocks to the west of Selsey Bill on Sunday afternoon while trying to help his girlfriend.
Solent Coastguard received two emergency calls from members of the public around 1:20pm saying that there was a girl in the water in trouble.
Coastguard officers from Selsey were immediately sent to the scene and the Coastguard Rescue helicopter Victor Alpha from Lee on Solent was also scrambled. The Selsey inshore RNLI lifeboat was also involved in the rescue operation.
The young woman was helped ashore by the Coastguard Rescue team and members of the public and was taken to St Richards Hospital in Chichester for treatment.
The man was located by the lifeboat crew and taken to the lifeboat station where he was then airlifted to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, where he was pronounced dead.
A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "This is a tragic accident and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends."

Teenager missing near Loch Lomond
A joint search operation involving Clyde Coastguard and the police has been launched after a 15-year-old boy was reported missing while holidaying with his family near Loch Lomond. The boy was last seen at 4.45pm on Tuesday evening on the opposite shore of Loch Lomond from Ardlui. Strathclyde police issued a request for assistance at around 04.

Rescue Teams Find Body In Missing Tourist Hunt
Rescue teams searching for a missing 48-year-old man have found a body. Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team discovered the remains while searching for Simon Bally of Stoke-on-Trent, at the head of the Buttermere Valley on Tuesday.

Second Man Sought After 'Cliff Incident'
A search is continuing after one man died and another disappeared following an incident on cliffs in north Wales. Coastguards were alerted shortly after two men were reported missing from cliffs around Cable Bay in Anglesey around 8.15pm on Wednesday.

Coastguard Warning Over Drunk Man's Sea Rescue
People have been warned against swimming while drunk after a man was rescued off Somerset at the same spot where two people died last week. A man in his 30s had to be pulled out of the water off the coast of Weston-super-Mare after he got into trouble. Two coastguard rescue teams, two police officers and two helicopters were involved in the rescue.
