Boy shot dead in south London 'bike chase'

A 16-year-old boy has been shot dead after he was apparently chased by a group of youths on bicycles in south London.

Police were called to Cassell House in Stockwell just after midnight on Thursday following reports that shots had been fired.

Officers found the teenager suffering from gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police's Operation Trident team, which investigates gun crime in the capital's black community.

No-one has been arrested so far, but police said that they believe the identity of the victim is known. A post-mortem is due to be carried out on Thursday.

Detective Inspector Geoff Whitehouse said: "Initial reports suggest that the victim was running away from a number of youths on bicycles prior to being shot."

Police have appealed for information about the shooting and have asked anyone with information to contact them on: 0208 247 4553 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
