MoD to name soldier killed in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defence is expected to name a soldier killed in an explosion in Afghanistan on Wednesday, later today.

The soldier, from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, was killed in an explosion around 5:50am local time in the northeastern outskirts of Sangin in the Helmand province. Two other soldiers were also injured.

The soldiers had been taking part in a routine patrol and were returning to their patrol base when the explosion struck their Vector vehicle.

An emergency response helicopter was requested and the soldier was flown to the ISAF medical facility at Camp Bastion for treatment, but he did not survive.

The two other soldiers were also taken to the ISAF hospital for treatment and their injuries are not life threatening.

The MoD said that the Vector vehicle could not be removed so it was destroyed in order to avoid it falling into enemy hands, before the convoy continued on to its destination.
