British schoolgirls assaulted on French trip

Three British schoolgirls have been assaulted by a man in the French hostel room in which they were sleeping, it has been reported.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning at the Pinede Youth Hostel in Saint-Brevin as the 13 and 14-year-old pupils from Kingsbridge Community College in south Devon slept.

A man entered the room, after apparently getting a key from a hostel staff member, and touched the necks of two girls and the hand of a third before a fourth girl screamed.

A 24-year-old French national was arrested on suspicion of sexual aggression and put under examination for sexual assault. He was released on bail after a court appearance.

The hostel where the incident took place is only a few miles from Pleine-Fougeres where 13-year-old Caroline Dickinson was raped and murdered in 1996.

In 2004, Francisco Arce Montes, then 54, a former waiter from Northern Spain, was jailed for 30 years for her murder.
