Pair rescued from cave in Cornwall
An RNLI lifeguard and a female companion have been rescued after being trapped for several hours in a cave in the Porth area of Cornwall.
Male lifeguard, Shane Davis, 22, and Renee Potgieter, 21, both from New Zealand, had gone to explore the cave at Trenance Point near Mawgan Porth, which is only accessible at low tide, on Monday afternoon. However, they were trapped by the rising tide.
A search was launched when they failed to return several hours later.
The search involved the Padstow lifeboat, a rescue helicopter, two Coastguard Rescue teams from Newquay and St Merryn, two further inshore lifeboats from Newquay, two lifeguard jet skis, one lifeguard in-shore rescue boat and local police.
Nothing was found during the afternoon and early evening, but just before 11pm, two men from the local Coastguard cliff rescue team were lowered to the mouth of the cave and the rescue helicopter shone a light into the cave mouth to illuminate the scene.
Shortly afterwards, the Padstow lifeboat reported seeing Mr Davis swim from a cave and he told them that Ms Potgieter was at the back of the cave, suffering from hypothermia. He had swum, for some time, to reach the cave entrance and the open sea.
Rescuers were able to enter the cave to locate Ms Potgieter and bring her to safety. She was airlifted to hospital.
Ian Guy, Falmouth Coastguard Watch Manager, said: "To hear of the successful recovery has been of great cheer to all the rescue units who have worked on this incident. We were very concerned for their safety given the rough conditions earlier yesterday afternoon and, of course, thanks are due to all the individuals and team efforts who were involved in their eventual rescue."
