Youth convicted of schoolboy footballer's murder
A 17-year-old youth has been convicted of the murder of schoolboy footballer Kiyan Prince at the Old Bailey on Monday.
Hannad Hasan, of Colindale, north London, had denied murdering the 15-year-old, but admitted manslaughter, claiming Kiyan's death was an accident.
However, the prosecution did not accept the plea of manslaughter.
Hasan can now be named after Mr Justice Wilkie lifted a banning order preventing him from being identified.
Kiyan, who played for the Queens Park Rangers youth team, was stabbed through the heart as he tried to intervene in a fight outside the London Academy in Edgeware, north London in May 2006.
The court heard how Hasan put Kiyan in a headlock before stabbing him. Hasan claimed that he had been trying to scratch Kiyan on the arm, saying "just a little scratch there, but it went deep in... cos I never used a knife before."
The trial was the third in the case. The jury in the first trial failed to agree on a verdict, while a retrial was abandoned two days after the jury retired, when Kiyan's father reportedly approached a female juror on her way home.
Hasan has been remanded in custody until July 27, when he will be sentenced.
