Henman sees off Moya
Tim Henman has seen off a determined Carlos Moya seeded 25 in a marathon nail-biting first round match at Wimbledon.
The first set was suspended due to rain at 3-5 with Moya fighting his way back into the first set after a comfortable looking start for a confident looking Tim Henman. Play did not resume again until 6.45pm when many of the spectators had gone home leaving the Wimbledon faithful to view the spectacle of a first round match that displayed some gritty play by both Henman and his Spanish opponent. Henman took the first set, the crowd were pleased, but Moya was far from finished.
The Spaniard fresh from the break took the first three games in the second set. As the evening shadows lengthened across the court, Henman slumped to a 6-1 drubbing in the second to tie the match at one set all.
The third set saw some unusual play as Moya produced an efficient serve-volley game to outfox Henman and take the closely fought third set.
The fourth set saw both player dig even deeper and Henman varied his play to eventually outsmart his opponent with a drop shot after a spell of indecisive shots.
The fifth set looked like swinging in Moya's favour, but at 5 all Henman dug deep. He saved a break point and a double fault from Moya gave Henman no less than four match points, but it was to no avail and Moya wriggled off the hook. At 9.20pm the light was failing and play was suspended.
Resuming at 5-5 on Tuesday afternoon, the fifth set turned into a tense match. After almost 70 minutes of furious play Henman won the match after a titanic struggle as Moya double faulted. Henman's seventh match point ended in victory.
Moya v. Henman 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 2-6, 11-13.
In the women's draw Katie O'Brien beat Germany's Sandra Kloesel 6-3, 7-5.
O'Brien secured the first set quickly when play resumed on Monday after play was suspended at 5-3. The second saw an early break for Kloesel, but O'Brien was able to break back twice to win the second set and a place in the second round.
O'Brien will face the 31st seed Michaella Krajicek.
