'Loud blast' heard in London building collapse

A building housing the campaign offices of Labour deputy leadership contender Hazel Blears has partially collapsed in Victoria in central London.

Emergency services were called to the Queen's Gate Building in Dean Farrar Street in Westminister around 4pm on Tuesday.

The building is located near Scotland Yard.

There is a huge pile of rubble in the street and it is believed that the top two floors of the five-storey building have collapsed. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang or blast as the building collapsed. It is believed that the floors affected were undergoing renovation at the time of the collapse.

Around 50 firefighters are currently at the scene, London Fire Service confirmed, and two urban search and rescue vehicles are at the scene to search for possible casualties.

London Ambulance Service said that one person was being treated for minor injuries in hospital following the incident.

It has been reported that Ms Blears had held a meeting with a number of MPs in the building a few hours before the collapse, but a spokesperson said that her staff had been evacuated and none of them were injured in the incident.
