Suspects' images released in rail shooting case
Police investigating the shooting of a commuter during an armed robbery at a railway station have issued e-fit images of two suspects that they want to question.
Adam Mapleson, 24, was shot in the chest as he attempted to intervene when a security guard and her colleague were held at gunpoint by armed robbers as they loaded a cash machine at Rayleigh railway station on May 25.
The robbers escaped with a cash box which contained a substantial sum of money.
Detective Superintendent Michael Field said: "Adam is recovering well in hospital and was able to speak briefly with British Transport Police officers.
"The e-fit images we have released are based on eye witness descriptions of the men who stole the cash box."
The first suspect is described as white, in his late thirties, of stocky build, with brown hair and possibly a pony tail. He was wearing a dark jacket, trainers and a bandana around his neck and walked with a limp.
The second suspect is described as white, aged in his twenties or thirties, of medium build, with short brown hair and a local accent.
The robbers fled the scene in a white Ford Escort, which was later found abandoned. Police said that the car had been purchased from a dealer in Kent on May 17 and had been seen driving erratically in Websters Way near Rayleigh railway station on the day of the attack. They have appealed for further information about the car.
A man arrested in connection with the attack has been released on bail.
A £25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the robbers.
