First sex-change mayor for Britain

Britain's first sex-change mayor has been sworn in at a ceremony in Cambridge.

Liberal Democrat councillor Jenny Bailey, 45, was made civic leader of Cambridge City Council in a ceremony on Thursday.

Her partner, former councillor Jennifer Liddle, 49 - who also underwent a sex change operation - will be her mayoress.

The couple met while undergoing hormone replacement therapy.

Mrs Bailey was once married and has two children aged 20 and 18.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Bailey said that she was "honoured" that her fellow councillors had chosen her as mayor.

She said: "I entered local politics because I believe in public service and because I wanted to make a contribution to the wonderful city we live in."

A spokesperson for the Local Government Association confirmed that Mrs Bailey would be the first transgender mayor in the UK.
