Fresh clues in Madeleine disappearance

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal are following up four new pieces of information, it has been reported.

It is understood that the clues came from hundreds of calls received by a special UK telephone line set up by Crimestoppers.

Three-year-old Madeleine from Rothley in Leicestershire, disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve lat Thursday night.

She had been with her younger twin siblings, two-year-old Sean and Amelie, while her parents, Gerry and Kate, had dinner in a nearby restaurant, although they had made regular checks on the children.

According to reports in Portugal, police are searching for two men and a woman who are understood to have been seen with a girl fitting Madeleine's description.

Police have also received CCTV footage showing a girl fitting Madeleine's description at a service station just a few miles from where she was abducted.

It was also reported that a local shopkeeper was shown an image of a possible suspect, but it is believed that the image was no more than a long oval-shaped face with hair, but no facial features.

The Portuguese police have been criticised by some sections of the British media, with claims that the police lacked experience and that the investigation had been too slow in the initial stages.

However, earlier this week, the British Ambassador to Portugal, John Buck, has defended the police investigation saying that he had received assurances that police were doing all they could to find Madeleine and that her parents were happy with the investigation.

British child abduction experts and police officers are assisting the Portuguese investigation. Among them is Superintendent Graham Hill of Surrey Police, who investigated the disappearance and murder of Amanda 'Milly' Dowler.

Madeleine’s family has launched a poster campaign and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and the Virtual Global Taskforce have launched an online appeal.

Everton FC have also released a photograph of Madeleine wearing one of their football shirts. Team captain Phil Neville said: "Everton has fans all over the world and I know that they, along with everyone connected with the football club, are hoping and praying for Madeleine's safe return."

A service, organised by friends of the McCann family, is also being held in Merseyside later on Thursday to pray for Madeleine's safe return. The service will be led by Father Paul Seddon, who married Gerry and Kate McCann and baptised Madeleine.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111 (UK) or: +44 1883 731 336.
