UK experts join search for Madeleine
Two forensic behaviourial analysts from the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre have flown to Portugal to help in the search for missing three-year-old Madeleine McCann.
Madeleine disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve last Thursday night. She had been with her younger twin siblings, two-year-old Sean and Amelie, while her parents had dinner in a nearby restaurant, although they had made regular checks on the children.
Portuguese police have so far followed up 350 separate leads, interviewed 100 people, searched 500 apartments and taken hundreds of calls from the public.
However, the response has been criticised by some sections of the British media, with claims that the police lacked experience and that the investigation had been too slow in the initial stages.
However, the British Ambassador to Portugal, John Buck, has defended the police investigation saying that he had received assurances that police were doing all they could to find Madeleine and that her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann were happy with the investigation.
A vigil has been held in the McCann's home village of Rothley in Leicestershire.
An online appeal has also been launched by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and the Virtual Global Taskforce. It appears in English, Portuguese and Spanish and urges people to come forward with any information that could help police find Madeleine. The appeal can be found at www.ceop.gov.uk or www.virtualglobaltaskforce.com.
