Priest sentenced for contempt

The priest found guilty of contempt of court during the Angelika Kluk murder trial has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

Father Gerry Nugent was repeatedly warned about prevaricating - making a statement which deviates from the truth - while being questioned during the trial.

During the trial, Father Nugent, 63, had claimed to have had an affair with Angelika, but had changed his story on three separate occasions while giving evidence.

High Court judge Lord Menzies told Father Nugent that he would have been jailed for the offence under normal circumstances.

However, he said that the priest, a self-confessed alcoholic, was suffering from psychological stress and also took into account his history of helping others.

Father Nugent was also placed on probation for one year.

Ms Kluk, a 23-year-old Polish student, was living in the chapel house of Father Nugent's church, St Patrick's Church in Glasgow, and was working as a cleaner in order to save money for her studies in Gdansk.

Last Friday, Peter Tobin, 60, was jailed for life for her rape and murder.

A convicted sex offender, Tobin was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in jail and was described by Lord Menzies as "an evil man".
