Blair to stay on as MP

Reports that Tony Blair will announce next week that he is resigning as an MP after quitting as Prime Minister have been denied by Downing Street.

Mr Blair announced that he will make a statement next week on his future as Labour Party Leader, which has fuelled speculation over how long he will sit in the House of Commons as a backbench MP. On Tuesday this week Mr Blair said that he was making an announcement on his future plans next week.

It is speculated that Mr Blair may stand down as Labour Leader around the time of the autumn party conference although he has yet to announce a date for his declared intention to stand down as prime minister.

Mr Blair has been the MP for Sedgefield since 1983.

The Chancellor Gordon Brown is the current favourite to take over the reins of the Labour Party.

Two backbenchers John McDonnell and Michael Meacher have declared their intention to stand for the leadership contest.
