Blair rejects call for July 7 inquiry

Prime Minister Tony Blair has rejected calls for a full independent inquiry into the July 7 bombings.

Mr Blair dismissed demands from Conservative leader David Cameron for a fresh inquiry at Prime Minister's question time, saying that a new investigation would divert resources away from the current fight against terrorism.

This week, survivors and relatives of victims of the July 7 bomb attacks called for an inquiry following revelations at the trial of five men over a fertiliser bomb plot in the UK.

It emerged at the end of a year-long trial that one of the men, Omar Khyam, had been observed meeting with two of the July 7 suicide bombers - Mohammed Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer - a year before the attacks took place.

It also subsequently emerged that the Intelligence and and Security Committee, which held the original inquiry into the attacks were not shown surveillance photographs of Khan linking him to known militants.

The BBC reported that only one photograph was shown to the ISC, although MI5 had six photographs.

However, Mr Blair insisted on Wednesday that the ISC had been shown all the relevant information.

The ISC has been asked to examine the information again in the wake of the new revelations.

All five men charged with involvement in the fertiliser bomb plot were jailed for life on Monday.
