Church choirmaster jailed for abuse

A church choirmaster has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for abusing boys in his choir.

Peter Halliday, 61, from Farnborough in Hampshire admitted sexually abusing three boys in his care between 1985 and 1990 when he was organist and choirmaster at St Peter's Church in Farnborough.

He pleaded guilty to ten charges of indecent assault.

Halliday was ordered to pay the boys £2,000 compensation each, banned from working with children for life and placed on the Sex Offenders' Register.

It has emerged that the Church of England received a complaint from one boy's family in 1990.

However, instead of contacting the police, it has been reported that Halliday was asked to leave the church and agree to stay away from young boys.

Three years later, one of the choirboys bumped into Halliday again at a residential music course.

Halliday was only charged with indecently assaulting children when he gave up his job with the Royal School of Church Music.

The Church of England said that it now had "robust policies" in place to deal with child abuse.
