World Cup winner Alan Ball dies

England World Cup winner Alan Ball has died at the age of 61.

The former Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal and Southampton player collapsed outside his home in Hampshire as he tackled a bonfire.

Ball was the youngest member of England's World Cup-winning squad in 1966. He went on to win 72 caps for his country.

He is the second member of the squad, which beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley to die.

Captain Bobby Moore died of cancer in 1993.

Ball was also part of Everton's league championship-winning side and also appeared in the 1970 Word Cup finals in Mexico.

He also managed seven football clubs, including Portsmouth, Southampton and Manchester City.

Ball was also awarded an MBE in 2000 for his services to football.

In May 2005, Ball put his World Cup winners' medal and commemorative tournament cap up for auction in order to raise money for his family. They were sold for £140,000.

Ball is survived by his son Jimmy and two daughters, Mandy and Keeley. His wife, Lesley, to whom he was married for more than 36 years, died of cancer three years ago.
