Father pays tribute to marathon death son

The father of the man who died after collapsing at the end of the London Marathon has paid tribute to his son.

Chris Rogers, 52, said that his 22-year-old son David had been "doing what he wanted to do".

David Rogers, a fitness instructor from Milton Keynes, finished the race - his first marathon, in under four hours.

Mr Rogers, from Westoning, Bedford, told the 'Daily Telegraph' that he was watching the race with his wife, and David's mother, Sarah. He said: "We saw him coming across Tower Bridge. He saw us and waved and then leapt in the air in a star jump."

Mr Rogers said that he found out that David had been admitted to Charing Cross Hospital after he failed to appear at an agreed meeting point.

He died on Monday morning.

Race organisers have offered their "deepest sympathy and condolences" to David's family and friends.

More than 36,000 people took part in this year's event, which saw temperatures soar to 21C. St John's Ambulance said that they treated more than 5,000 people, during the course of the marathon, while 73 people were treated in hospital.
