Gere kiss sparks controversy in India

Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty have sparked controversy, after they shared a kiss at an event to promote Aids awareness.

The American movie star and the Bollywood actress were in Mumbai at the rally in New Delhi to encourage safe sex, especially to Indian lorry drivers, who are considered to be a high-risk group, as many use prostitutes for sex.

58-year-old Gere shouted “No condom, no sex” to the crowds in Hindi. Thousands whistled loudly and whooped with delight when he kissed Shetty her on the hand, kissed her on both cheeks then embraced her.

However, later effigies of Richard Gere were then burned on the streets of India by crowds of men, who shouted “Down with Richard Gere”.

They also burnt some Shetty posters, shouting “Death to Shilpa Shetty”.

Protestors said his embrace had been “vulgar” and they demanded he apologise. Sex and public displays of affection are still considered taboo in India.
