Abortion services in crisis

Abortion services in Britain are facing a crisis because a number of NHS doctors are refusing to be involved in carrying out the procedure.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has warned the decline in doctors prepared to perform an abortion is a phenomenon that threatens to plunge the abortion service into chaos.

Around 190,000 abortions take place in England and Wales each year.

Doctors have always been able to opt out of doing abortions on religious grounds.

Richard Warren, the honorary secretary of the RCOG, said: "In the past, abortion was an accepted part of the workload. People did not like it but they accepted it was in the best interests of the woman concerned. Now we are seeing more doctors who are reluctant to be involved in the process."
