Paedophile jailed for online grooming
A man has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for attempting to meet what he believed to be an eleven-year-old girl after 'grooming' her on the internet.
David Carey, of Chappel Park Road, Battle in Sussex was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act, making indecent images of children and possession of indecent images of children.
The conviction was the result of an investigation where a man was arrested in January 2006 for making and possessing indecent images of children.
During an examination of his computer, police discovered that the man had been pretending to be an 11-year-old girl while chatting online.
Police said that the chat had been "sexually explicit" and usually involved the men, who presumed they were chatting to an eleven-year-old, sending 'her' indecent images.
Shortly, after that arrest, a detective from the Met's Child Abuse Investigation Command assumed the 11-year-old girl's online identity and used it to continue to talk online with paedophiles.
During the trial, it emerged that Carey requested that he and the 'girl' meet up and he arranged to meet 'her' outside a London Tube station.
On September 22, officers from the Met's Paedophile Unit observed a man driving past the station who pulled up nearby and started texting. He was arrested and a subsequent examination of his computer found identical correspondence logs as to those on the undercover police officer's.
Ten indecent images of young girls aged between ten and twelve were recovered and his mobile phone was found to contain text messages which had been sent to the 'girl'.
Acting Detective Superintendent Nick Stevens from the Paedophile Unit said: "Carey's conviction is part of a year-long investigation that used covert internet techniques to gain vital evidence. There are many ongoing operations of this type being conducted by the Paedophile Unit and its use is a cutting edge tactic for the team and one that we will be using more and more in future to target predatory paedophiles.
"Hopefully this case will be another reminder to paedophiles that, wherever they go and whatever their occupation, my team could be tracking them. I hope that it is also a reminder to parents that they must remain ever vigilant to ensure their children's safe use of the internet."
