Spurs fan charged over FA cup match incident

A Tottenham Hotspurs fan has been arrested on suspicion of assault and encroaching after running onto the pitch during an FA Cup match between Spurs and Chelsea and aiming a punch at Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

The incident happened as Chelsea celebrated their 2-1 win over Spurs in the FA Cup quarter-final replay on Monday night.

A Chelsea fan who also ran on to the pitch has also been charged by police.

The Football Association confirmed that it would contact Tottenham Hotspurs regarding the incident.

A statement released by the FA said: "These scenes were totally unacceptable and we will be contacting Spurs as a matter of priority. We want to establish what safety and security provisions were in place for the game and to confirm what action was taken against the fans who ran onto the pitch. We understand that both individuals were arrested and we would expect them to be given football banning orders."

A statement released by Tottenham Hotspurs said: "With reference to the incident which followed last night's FA Cup replay, we can confirm that two fans entered the field of play, one from each club.

The Tottenham Hotspur fan is to receive an immediate lifetime ban from matches at White Hart Lane and will appear in court during the coming week.

Details of the Chelsea supporter have been forwarded to Chelsea Football Club and we believe that they will be taking similar action.

"We shall co-operate fully with the FA. The club considers the safety of supporters and players to be paramount."
