Councillor sold girlfriend for sex

A councillor who advertised his girlfriend for sex on the internet has been given a 12-month suspended jail sentence.

Alan Burkitt, 48, of West Bromwich, West Midlands, admitted four counts of causing prostitution between November 2005 and February 2006.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard how Burkitt, who represented Charlemont with Grove Vale ward for Sandwell Council, had advertised the woman, whom he had a relationship with for eight years, on an internet website. He claimed that she had consented to the idea in order to help them out of financial difficulties.

However, Stuart Clarkson, prosecuting, told the court that the woman had an IQ of 52 and suffered mild learning disabilities.

The court heard how more than 20 men paid for her services at the couple's home while Burkitt sat in the room next door.

The case came to light last year and Burkitt was arrested on March after the woman told her family what was going on.

Andrew Fisher, defending, said that the couple had both agreed to the plan and said that Burkitt has also advertised himself on the same web site, but there was little interest in him.

Burkitt has claimed that the woman had made the accusations against him when she mistakenly believed that he was seeing another woman.

Burkitt's 12-month sentence was suspended for two years.
