Man remanded following vicar's stabbing
A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of a vicar in Wales.
Geriant David Evans, 23, was remanded in custody to appear in Merthyr Crown Court later this month.
Father-of-two Paul Bennett, 59, was murdered at St Fagan's Church in Trecynon, near Aberdare in south Wales, on Wednesday afternoon.
Initial examinations revealed that Father Bennett suffered multiple stab wounds.
Police recovered a knife from the scene believed to be the murder weapon.
Flowers and candles have been left at the scene and people have attended a memorial service at St Luke's Church in Cwndare in remembrance of Father Bennett.
In a tribute to Father Bennett his familiy said: "Paul was a loyal son and a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who spent his whole life putting the thoughts and feelings of others ahead of his own.
"He lived his life for his people and cared deeper than anyone can imagine for his church. We loved him dearly and cannot imagine life without him. All we can hope and pray for is that he hasn't lost his life in vain."
Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday afternoon and who may have information to come forward.

A 24-year-old man is to be detained indefinitely in Ashworth Hospital after admitting to killing a vicar in South Wales. Geraint Evans, 24, of Trecynon, near Aberdare, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Father Paul Bennett on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

A banned driver who failed to call an ambulance when his girlfriend was fatally injured in a car accident has been jailed for life. Andrew Bennett, 19, was driving the Subaru Impreza car when it crashed on outskirts of Sheffield in April. His girlfriend, 17-year-old Kirsty Cash was thrown through the windshield of the car.

Four men have been sentenced to a total of 79 years imprisonment for the murder of a cyclist. A gang of four set upon Stephen Green (55), from Luton as he made his way home on his bike last May. Reports say he was kicked, stamped on and battered by the gang. He was admitted to Luton and Dunstable Hospital where he died from his injuries.
