Man remanded following vicar's stabbing

A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of a vicar in Wales.

Geriant David Evans, 23, was remanded in custody to appear in Merthyr Crown Court later this month.

Father-of-two Paul Bennett, 59, was murdered at St Fagan's Church in Trecynon, near Aberdare in south Wales, on Wednesday afternoon.

Initial examinations revealed that Father Bennett suffered multiple stab wounds.

Police recovered a knife from the scene believed to be the murder weapon.

Flowers and candles have been left at the scene and people have attended a memorial service at St Luke's Church in Cwndare in remembrance of Father Bennett.

In a tribute to Father Bennett his familiy said: "Paul was a loyal son and a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who spent his whole life putting the thoughts and feelings of others ahead of his own.

"He lived his life for his people and cared deeper than anyone can imagine for his church. We loved him dearly and cannot imagine life without him. All we can hope and pray for is that he hasn't lost his life in vain."

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday afternoon and who may have information to come forward.
