British skiers die on Norwegian mountain

Two British cross-country skiers are believed to have frozen to death in blizzard conditions on a Norwegian mountain.

The bodies of Peter Wilson, 18, from Inverness-shire and James Ross, 50, from Ross-shire, were found in the Hardangervidda region by chance by a Red Cross rescue patrol.

A third man, Rupert Wilson, 48, - the father of 18-year-old Peter - was found alive. He is in hospital in a stable condition, after suffering from severe hypothermia.

The three men, who all worked for LifeScan Scotland, which manufactures products for diabetes, began their trip on Friday.

A spokesperson for Bergen Police said that the men appeared to have got into difficulty in snowy, foggy and windy conditions as they headed for a cabin. They were just two miles from the cabin when they were discovered, by chance, by a Red Cross rescue patrol.

A spokesperson for the Norwegian Red Cross said that the men may not have been properly equipped to deal with the weather. Bernt Apeland told reporters: "The terrain is not very challenging, but the climate is very changeable and that's what you need to look out for in that kind of area."
