Kidnapped journalist is Italian reporter

The journalist kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan on Tuesday is veteran Italian reporter Daniele Mastrogiacomo.

Mastrogiacomo, 52, worked for the Rome-based daily newspaper La Repubblica. He was abducted along with two Afghan guides who have been named as Ajmal and Syed Agha.

It was initially reported that a British journalist had been abducted.

A spokesperson for the Taliban said that the three men were detained in Nad Ali in the Helmand province, because they had entered the area without permission.

Nad Ali is one of the main areas where the opium poppy is grown.

The area is understood to be controlled by Mullah Dadullah, a founder member of the Taliban.
