Airbus to cut 1,600 jobs in UK
European plane manufacturer Airbus has announced plans to cut 1,600 jobs in the UK over the next four years.
More than 11,000 staff are employed by Airbus in the UK at sites in Filton near Bristol and Broughton, North Wales.
The job cuts will be split between both sites and are expected to affect more temporary workers on short-term contracts than directly employed staff.
The UK job cuts are part of plans to cut 10,000 across Europe. More than 4,000 jobs are to go in France, as well as 3,700 jobs in Germany and 400 in Spain.
The job cuts were announced by Airbus President and CEO Louis Gallois in Toulouse on Wednesday.
Mr Gallois said that one factor in the job cuts was the production problems with the A380, as well as a need to make the company more competitive against rivals such as Boeing in the US.
Commenting on the announcement, Bernie Hamilton, Amicus' lead officer for aerospace, said: "We are extremely disappointed that 1,600 jobs will be lost in the UK, but the company has given its assurance that it will work with the trade unions to ensure that there will be no compulsory redundancies."
