London nightclubs closed by police

Eight London nightclubs have been closed by police, because of a threat to public safety.

The nightclubs, understood to include Crystal and Chinawhite, are all based in the City of Westminster, which encompasses Soho, Mayfair and The Strand.

Police have not confirmed the reason for the closures, but did say that it was not linked to terrorism.

However, the 'Evening Standard' reported that the closures were linked to a suspected turf war between door staff.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: "Following intelligence received, we contacted representatives of eight nightclubs in Westminster on Monday who volunteered to close for business.

"At this time we consider the risk to public safety is still such that we must continue to request that the venues remain closed."

The situation is being reviewed on Thursday. A spokesperson for Westminster City Council confirmed that council officers would be liaising with police on Thursday.
