Ryanair warns pilots on airport approaches

Ryanair has threatened to discipline pilots following a warning over pilots making dangerous approaches to airports.

Chief Executive Michael O'Leary informed pilots that they would be demoted if such incidents occurred and sacked if it happened twice.

Ryanair stressed that the memo underlined the airline's commitment to passenger safety.

'The Times', which obtained the memo dated September 25, 2006, revealed that the airline was concerned about pilots making "high-energy approach incidents". Pilots were cautioned to make a "go-around" if they had passed the 500ft landing gate incorrectly or at too high a speed.

It is reported that there had been three incidents of dangerous approaches to airports in a two-year period. In one case, a jet flew too low on the approach to Cork airport - causing a number of complaints to be lodged by residents.

Ryanair has made 500,000 flights in the two year period.
