British soldier killed in Iraq
A roadside bomb has killed a British soldier in Basra, southern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
It is understood that the soldier, who was serving as part of the British contingent of the Multi-National Force in southeastern Iraq, was killed when the bomb exploded, targeting a MNF Warrior patrol manoeuvring on routine duties in the Al Ashshar district of Basra.
A number of civilians were also injured in the attack, which took place near the US consulate in the city.
The Ministry of Defence said that next of kin were being informed and that further details would be released shortly.
The soldier's death brings the number of UK military personnel who have died in Iraq since hostilities began to 131.

Sergeant Christian Hickey, of the 1st Battalion the Coldstream Guards, died as a result of his injuries, following the explosion, which took place around 11:23 local time in Basra on Tuesday night.
