'Fat dog' owners found guilty of animal cruelty
Two brothers who allowed their pet Labrador to become "grossly" overweight have been found guilty of animal cruelty.
Derek and David Benton, aged 62 and 53 respectively, were found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to nine-year-old Rusty by providing an inappropriate diet.
The brothers, from Fordham in Cambridgeshire, had allowed Rusty's weight to rise to eleven stone.
The court was told that the brothers had argued advice from a vet on how to deal with the dog's condition. However, the brothers had denied committing any offence.
The brothers received a three-year conditional discharge by magistrates in Ely. However, Rusty will be allowed to be return to the brothers on the condition that he is cared for properly and does not gain any more weight.
Since the dog was taken from the brothers last March by RSPCA inspectors, he has lost three-and-a-half stones under the guidance of vets.
