Killer dog tested for drugs

The dog which attacked and killed a five-year-old girl in Merseyside on New Year's Day has been tested for illegal drugs.

Ellie Lawrenson suffered fatal injuries when the pit bull terrier-type dog attacked her at her grandmother's home in St Helens. Her grandmother, Jackie Simpson, 46, was also injured during the attack.

The one-year-old dog, called Reuben, was shot dead after the attack.

Police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination carried out the dog included toxicology tests, which would determine if the animal had been given drugs such as steroids, in order to build the dog up for fighting.

It is understood that the dog belonged to Ellie's uncle, 23-year-old Kiel Simpson. He was questioned by police last week, but was not arrested.

Owning a pit bull terrier-type breed, which is illegal under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act, carries a maximum sentence of six months imprisonment or a £5,000 fine.
