Teenage boy sets Atlantic record
A British teenager has become the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic single-handed.
Michael Perham, 14, from Potters Bar in Hertsfordshire, who has sailed since he was seven years old, set off from Gibraltar on November 18, 2006 on the 3,500 mile crossing in his bid to win a place in the record books.
The crossing to Antigua, which was originally a four-week trip, saw the teenager take six weeks to make the voyage following a short stop-over for repairs at the Canaries.
Michael sailed his yacht into Antigua's Nelson Dockyard, where he said he was overwhelmed by the reception, though he said it was "brilliant" to be back on dry land. He spoke via a video link to his mother who congratulated her son on the accomplishment.
His 28ft yacht 'Cheeky Monkey' was shadowed across the Atlantic by his father, who kept in touch with his son by radio during the crossing.
Seb Clover, 15, from the Isle of Wight previously held the record. Michael said that the record set in 2003 had inspired him.

British explorer sets Atlantic crossing record
British explorer David Hempleman-Adams has today become the first open gondola hot-air pilot to successfully cross the Atlantic. The BBC reported this morning that the hot-air balloon crossed the southwestern tip of Ireland this morning at around 8.30am on day three of the record attempt and was looking for a safe location to land.

Record fine imposed on FA over Turkey game
The English Football Association was today handed a record fine by UEFA and issued with a final warning on the future conduct of fans. UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body today found the FA guilty of the disciplinary charges and fined them €99,000 - the highest ever fine for a racism-related charge.

Woman Dies During Charity Channel Swim
A woman from Barwell, Leicestershire, has died during a charity swim across the English Channel. Susan Taylor, who was in her 30s, got into difficulty while in the water and despite receiving treatment in a support boat was pronounced dead in Boulogne on Sunday.
