Mystery surrounds death of hanged Briton

Police investigating the death of Briton Stephen Bennett in an Indian town have admitted that they have no idea why he was in the area.

Mr Bennett, a father-of-two from Cheltenham, was found hanged from a tree in the town of Roha, 75 miles south-east of Mumbai on December 11.

He had been on a week-long holiday in India and had been due to return home for Christmas.

Indian police investigating the death have suggested that Mr Bennett may have been killed by villagers who had mistaken him for a sex attacker.

According to reports, Mr Bennett had apparently frightened a local woman by calling at her home in the early hours of the morning. She then panicked and woke up two men claiming to have been raped.

It is believed that Mr Bennett was then beaten with sticks before being hanged from a tree.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the killing, while two more are being sought by police.

Mr Bennett's parents, Carol and Maureen, said that he was an experienced traveller. They said that they had received a number of calls from their son until December 7 when they suddenly stopped.
