Cliff fall kills woman on New Year's Day walk
A 55-year-old woman was killed when a cliff face collapsed on top of her as she walked along a beach on New Year's Day.
Caroline Palser, from Frizington, became trapped under debris from the cliff face at South Beach, Whitehaven, around 11:50am on New Year's Day. Emergency services were called to the scene and attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The weather in the area had been extremely wet and windy prior to the incident.
A spokesperson for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "I think she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"We understand she was walking along the shore and part of the cliff face, about 20 feet high, gave way and buried her.
"We assisted to make the area safe and to get the lady out, but she was pronounced dead."
Parts of the cliff are also understood to have collapsed in December and fences and erosion warnings had been in place since then. A review of the fencing around the area is now being conducted by Copeland Council.
Health and safety officials are due to inspect the area.
A man also died after being electrocuted by a fallen cable in a field near Plymouth on Sunday, as stormy weather conditions swept across the UK. According to reports, Professor Roland Levinsky, 63, from the University of Plymouth was walking his dog when the incident occured.
The search for a 24-year-old man who was washed into the sea after climbing down cliffs on Sunday afternoon has also been called off.
The man, from the Derby area, disappeared at Trevone beach near Padstow, Cornwall, after climbing down cliffs, reportedly to inspect a blowhole.
Devon and Cornwall Police said that there had been high seas and gale force winds in the area and a police spokesperson said that climbing down the cliff in such conditions had been "very, very stupid."
The severe weather conditions across the UK had also caused several planned New Year's Eve celebrations in cities across the UK, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast to be cancelled.
