Kenyan rape report concludes 'insufficient evidence'
A Royal Military Police special inquiry into the key findings of a three-year investigation into allegations of rape by British soldiers whilst training in Kenya, has concluded that there is insufficient evidence for criminal prosecutions.
In 2003, a criminal investigation was launched into over 2,000 allegations of rape over a 55 year period.
Working with the Kenyan authorities and UK Home Office specialists, each allegation was re-examined. Where a viable further line of enquiry was established, a more detailed investigation was conducted in order to attempt to identify potential suspects.
However, insufficient evidence was available to identify any offender in any of the cases reported.
The RMP also looked into allegations that 'institutional acquiescence' had led to complaints being ignored by the British Army, but concluded there was no case to answer.
Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in an external review concluded that "there is no reliable evidence to support any single allegation made which would stand up to the Crown Prosecution Service evidence test and lead to a prosecution against any named individual".
They also found no evidence to suggest the British Army ignored complaints over the years.
Kenyan authorities, complainants and other interested parties will be briefed on the results of the investigation.
