Man jailed for 'web-rage' attack
A man has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for carrying out the first 'web-rage' attack in Britain.
Paul Gibbons, 47, attacked John Jones, 43, after they exchanged insults in an internet chatroom.
The Old Bailey heard how Gibbons, from south London, tracked down Mr Jones, from Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, by personal details he put online.
Gibbons went to Mr Jones' home armed with a pickaxe handle, accompanied by a man with a machete.
Mr Jones, who went to the door of his home, armed with a knife, was disarmed and beaten. Gibbons also cut his neck.
Judge Richard Hawkins told the prosecution that he accepted that Mr Jones had taunted him and dared him to go to his house where he would be greeted with weapons.
Gibbons was jailed for unlawful wounding. He had pleaded guilty last month after the prosecution agreed not to proceed with charges of attempted murder and making threats to kill.
Following the hearing, Essex Police warned the internet users not to reveal personal details online which would allow them to be traced.
