FSA warns of salmonella risk in imported eggs

Salmonella is estimated to be present in one in 30 boxes of imported eggs on sale in England, the Food Standards Agency has warned.

The FSA sampled a total of 1,744 boxes of six or more eggs and found salmonella inside eggs in ten boxes and on the egg shell in 157 boxes.

The eggs collected came from eight different countries across Europe, with two-thirds of the eggs collected originating in Spain. Spain also had the highest number of contaminated eggs - with an estimated one in every eight boxes. However, the FSA found that most of the contaminated eggs came from just three farms.

The country with the second highest number of contaminated eggs was France, where one in every 170 boxes being contaminated.

Only around 10% of eggs in the UK are imported and most of them are used in the catering trade.

Dr Andrew Wadge, Director of Food Safety at the FSA, said: "The vast majority of eggs we eat in the UK are salmonella-free. However, this survey shows that problems with salmonella in eggs have not gone away."

The FSA said that the elderly, the young, pregnant women and the sick should ensure that the eggs they eat are thoroughly cooked in order to minimise the risk of food poisoning.
