Life sentence for 'sadistic' robbers
Three armed robbers have been jailed for life for kidnapping their victims and subjecting them to "sadistic" violence.
London's Wood Green Crown Court heard how the gang had attacked motorists and pedestrians in London and robbed them of their valuables and forced them to hand over their PIN numbers.
The court heard how one man, who was so frightened he could not tell the gang the information they wanted to know, had his armed broken.
Jamaican national Robert Lincoln, 18, from Barking, east London, Portuguese national Pedro Frota, 19, also from Barking, and Rwandan Sofian Majera, 22, from Dagenham, variously pleaded guilty to 17 charges of robbery, a charge of assault with intent to rob and two counts of handling stolen goods between August 31 and December 14 last year.
Judge Witold Pawlak said that the defendants had treated their victims like "characters in an arcade game", while the prosecution said that homophobia and racial hatred had occasionally played a part in the selection of victims.
All three were told that they would have to serve a minimum of seven years before being eligible for parole.
Frota's older brother, Louis, 22, was also sentenced to four-and-a-half years for his lesser role in the offences.
All four now face deportation after their sentences are completed.
