Desert Orchid passes away

Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Desert Orchid has passed away peacefully at the age of 27.

The popular grey had achieved legendary status in the National Hunt arena for his flexibility and grit. Desert Orchid won 34 races including four wins in the King George VI Steeple Chase.

In a statement his former trainer David Elsworth said Desert Orchid had passed away peacefully in his stable at 6.05am this morning.

Mr Elsworth said: " There was no stress. He departed this world with dignity and no fuss. He did his dying in the same individual way that he did his living. It was time to go."

Desert Orchid had been ill for the past week and was losing his co-ordination.
