Brown and Milburn drawn into cash-for-honours investigation
Chancellor Gordon Brown and former health secretary Alan Milburn are the latest people asked to assist with the police investigation into the cash-for-honours affair.
It has been reported that Mr Milburn has been interviewed by police, while it is understood that the Chancellor has been requested to submit in writing what he knew about loans worth around £14 million made to the Labour party before last year's general election.
According to reports, other members of Labour's National Executive Committee, including Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, have also been asked to declare in writing what they knew about the loans.
However, party officials have said that Mr Brown would not have a role in party funding because of his role as Chancellor.
It emerged on Wednesday that police have sent letters to every member of the Cabinet, apart from Prime Minister Tony Blair, at the time of the last General Election, asking them to disclose anything they know about party loans.
On Tuesday, Attorney General Lord Goldsmith said that he would not stand aside from the investigation, because there were a number of offences for which he would be legally obliged to give his personal consent in order for a prosecution to take place.
Lord Goldsmith had been under pressure to step aside because he was the government's legal advisor and close to Mr Blair.
Director of Public Prosecutions Ken McDonald and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair have both announced that they would stand aside from decisions related to the investigation.
However, in a letter to shadow attorney general Dominic Grieve, Lord Goldsmith said that an independent QC would be appointed in order to review any relevant material sent by the Crown Prosecution Service.
