Farepak fund boosted by HBOS

The parent company of banking group Halifax has announced that it will donate £2m to the Farepak Family Fund.

Christmas hamper and voucher company Farepak was declared insolvent last month.

The HBOS banking group had been criticised by MPs for allowing the company to continuing to trade, but a company spokesperson told the BBC today that everything possible had been done for the company and the final decision had rested with the company’s directors.

Farepak, based in Swindon, collapsed in October with an estimated 150,000 customers facing the possibility of eventually receiving a few pence in the pound on what is believed to be an average £400 savings per customer.

Several companies have pledged funds to help support customers of Farepak. Direct home shopping firm Findel has joined retailers Tesco and Sainsbury in pledging funding to help customers.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said that customers would receive 25% of the value of their savings toward Sainsbury vouchers.

Tesco said that it would be providing £250,000 towards the fund to help reimburse customers.

Farepak, a subsidiary of European Home Retail, was placed in receivership after its bankers rejected a rescue plan.
