Search for pensioner missing from cruise ship
A search has been launched for a pensioner who has been reported missing from a cruise ship.
James Ewan, 73, from Burntisland, Fife, was reported missing from the Celebrity Century on Wednesday. The liner was on a 14-day cruise from Barcelona to Miami, which began last Friday. It had stopped at Madeira, but it is understood that logs indicated that Mr Ewan did not leave the vessel there.
The liner had retraced its path in order to search for the pensioner, but is now continuing on its journey. Portuguese coastguards are now continuing the search.
It is understood that Mr Ewan, believed to be a widower with no children, was travelling alone.
A man identified by Mr Ewan as his next of kin has been informed of his disappearance.
Royal Caribbean Cruises, which owns the Celebrity Century, said that the British Embassy, Portuguese maritime police, Bahamian maritime authorities and the FBI had been notified, as is the normal procedure in such cases.
Maritime police in Gibraltar and Spain have also been alerted.
