Government defeats Iraq vote in Commons
The government has narrowly avoided being forced by MPs to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the Iraq war.
Despite 12 Labour MPs rebelling, the motion tabled by the SNP and Plaid Cymru was defeated 298 to 273.
However, Defence Secretary Des Browne was quoted on record as saying that there would be a inquiry when “the time was right.”
Mr Browne’s comments, played down by party sources, have been seen as confirmation that there will indeed be an inquiry to see what lessons can be learned about the decision to take military intervention in Iraq.
Speaking in the Commons yesterday, Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett told MPs that supporting an inquiry now would be the wrong signal at the wrong time.
Reminding MPs that troops in Iraq were in great danger, Mrs Beckett said: “Our words will be heard a very, very long way away.”
Shadow foreign secretary William Hague said that it had been a “mistake” not to commit to holding an inquiry at some point.
Liberal democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell said that that the government had been on the defensive throughout and described the victory as “unconvincing.”
